Carpet Repair & Stretching in Fresno, CA
Re-stretching rippled carpet and repairing localized damage — patches, seams, transitions and pet damage — without replacing the room.
Much of what makes carpet look finished is repairable. Ripples and buckles are a sign the carpet has come loose from its tack strip and can be re-stretched. A burn, a stain that will not come out or a corner a dog has chewed can be cut out and patched with a matching piece. Seams that have opened can be re-bonded. These are a carpet installer's skills, and some carpet cleaning companies offer them alongside cleaning.
- Power-stretching to remove ripples and buckles
- Patching burns, permanent stains and pet damage
- Seam repair where carpet has split or frayed
- Re-securing edges at doorways and transitions
- Pad replacement beneath a repaired area
Why carpet ripples
Carpet is installed under tension, hooked onto tack strips around the room. Ripples appear when that tension is lost: the carpet was not stretched properly at installation, heavy furniture was dragged across it, the pad has broken down, or the backing has loosened with age. A proper repair uses a power stretcher braced against the opposite wall, not just a knee kicker, and trims the excess at the edge. Ripples are worth fixing promptly — they are a tripping hazard and the raised carpet wears quickly along the fold.
How patches work
A patch needs donor carpet. The best source is a remnant kept from the original installation. Failing that, a piece is taken from inside a closet. The damaged section is cut out, the donor piece is cut to match the pile direction and seamed in. On a carpet with some age and sun fade, a patch from a closet may be slightly brighter at first and blends with time.
Repair or replace?
Repair is sensible when the damage is local and the rest of the carpet has life left. It is not worth much when the carpet is worn through in the traffic lanes, the backing is delaminating across the room or it has widespread pet contamination. As a rough guide, carpet is commonly expected to last about ten to fifteen years depending on quality and traffic.

Carpet Repair & Stretching FAQs
Does carpet need to be stretched before or after cleaning?
Repairs and stretching are generally done first, with cleaning afterward. Carpet can relax slightly when wet, but it should return to flat as it dries; ripples that remain after it is fully dry need re-stretching.
Can pet-damaged carpet at a doorway be fixed?
Usually. The damaged strip is cut out and replaced with donor carpet, and the transition is re-secured. If the pad or subfloor is contaminated with urine, that should be treated or sealed at the same time or the odor will remain.
